Maria Sharapova is an aggressive baseliner, with power, depth, and angles on her forehand and backhand. Instead of using a traditional volley or overhead smash, she often prefers to hit a powerful “swinging” volley when approaching the net or attacking lobs. Sharapova is thought to have good speed around the court, especially considering her height.

At the beginning of 2008, some observers noted that Sharapova had developed her game, showing improved movement and footwork and the addition of a drop shot and sliced backhand to her repertoire of shots. Despite her powerful game, Maria Sharapova‘s greatest asset is considered to be her mental toughness and competitive spirit. Sharapova is known for on-court “grunting”, which reached a recorded 101 decibels  during a match at Wimbledon in 2005.

Off the court she was a social activist. The Maria Sharapova Foundation is committed to helping children around the world achieve their dreams. In 2007, Maria Sharapova became a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and donated $100,000 to Chernobyl-related projects. Recently, in partnership with the UNDP, Maria launched a $210,000 scholarship program for students from Chernobyl-affected areas of Belarus. Maria Sharapova turned professional in 2001 but played just one tournament that year. In the very next year, the 14 year-old Sharapova became the youngest female to reach the final of the junior Australian Open, and later in the year she reached the final of the junior Wimbledon Championships. She also won three titles on the International Tennis Federation  Circuit and played her first matches on the main Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) Tour, winning a match at the Pacific Life Open in Indian Wells, California, a Tier I event, before losing to former World No. 1 Monica Seles in the second round.

Off the court Maria Sharapova is known for her looks. She often takes modeling jobs and works on her endorsements, the likes of which include Motorola, Canon and Honda Japan. The attractive six-foot-tall blond often draws comparisons to fellow Russian tennis-pro-turned-model Anna Kournikova, but her skills on the court are what set the two apart.

At present, she is putting an end to her high school education through Keystone High, an online high school. She does photo shoots once in a while but her priority is tennis. Besides, she doesn’t need the money, as she has very lucrative endorsement deals with Nike, NEC and Prince. Maria Sharapova currently resides in Bradenton, Florida.
